Why has Handmade Jewellery become so popular in the last few years? More and more people are buying handmade jewellery online (and not just jewellery) and looking for it at craft fairs and markets.
It seems that nowadays mass produced and factory made costume jewellery is losing popularity. Some costume jewellery is manufactured to a very high standard but most is cheaply made with plastic components and glass stones. It tarnishes very quickly and will fall apart easily.

Mass produced means hundreds or thousands of the same thing. How many people will you see with the same jewellery piece as you and they will know exactly how much you paid for it. It’s nearly as bad as going out and finding that the person sitting across from you is wearing exactly the same dress.
Most handcrafted jewellery is limited edition or OOAK (one of a kind jewellery). Handmade jewellery can also be customised to fit you and suit you. Most handmade jewellery designs do not follow trends as they never go out of fashion. Statement jewellery pieces are a conversation starter. Wear something eye-catching or unusual and you will be asked again and again ‘where did you get it!”
Unique handmade jewellery designs make fantastic gifts – who doesn’t love getting a piece of jewellery that is totally unique! An OOAK jewellery design means that the jewellery gift has been chosen especially for that special someone.

But the main reason to buy handmade jewellery is because of the quality of the materials used and the exceptional workmanship (or in my case, workwomanship). Craftspeople take pride in their work and will put in any amount of extra time and effort to make your jewellery design perfect.
Also, if anything happens to your jewellery or if a part gets damaged the jewellery designer can usually repair or replace it. Even if you lose one of a pair of earrings it can be replaced so long as the jewellery artisan still has some of the same components in stock. How many single earrings do you have that no longer have a match?
The most popular handmade jewellery is crafted from sterling silver or copper. The artisan will design a piece, gather all the components and make each part by hand. Each individual part is perfected before adding it to the design. It is this method of working that means no two handcrafted pieces of jewellery will ever be an exact copy – it is impossible. Even matching earrings will have small differences – look closely and you will see.
And what about the price? In general, a jewellery store or boutique will have a 300% – 500% mark-up on each piece of jewellery. That is a huge amount of money for you to pay for your unique piece but those who love OOAK jewellery will pay it. Most jewellery designers will have no more than 10% profit mark-up on each piece – better value for you. Like me, most jewellery makers care more about the designing and making of the jewellery than about the profit. I make my jewellery for the love of the craft.
On my website, Fay Designs Jewellery, I give detailed descriptions of each piece of jewellery I sell. I will list the materials used in the design so you will know exactly what you are getting e.g. are the pearls in my pearl jewellery freshwater pearls or glass pearls, do I use genuine gemstone or reconstituted gemstone in my gemstone jewellery?
I hope you will enjoy browsing my jewellery designs as much as I have enjoyed making them.
