Crafted with Aves (Hail Mary beads) of 6mm jet black onyx gemstone and Paters (Our Father beads) of 6mm white jade, this rosary is a unique and stylish design.
The crucifix is crafted in pewter (lead & nickel free) and is exquisitely detailed, depicting Christ in high relief. It measures 5cm by 2.25cm. The center medal (1.5cm by 1cm) is also crafted in pewter with a raised relief Our Lady on the front and a Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Bernadette on the back.
The Irish Penal Rosary came into being during the years or religious oppression in Ireland, approximately 1691 to 1799. The English Protestant parliament which prohibited the practice of Catholicism and execution was the common penalty for breaking this law. These times became known as the Penal Times and it was during these times that the Penal Crucifix became popular. Due to it’s small size (in comparison) to the usual crucifixes, it was easy to hide in the palm of the hand or under clothing.
Each bead is hand wrapped with tarnish resistant silver plated wire using the traditional wire wrapping technique.
This technique involves passing a length of wire through the bead and wrapping it back around itself on each side of the bead to form a loop at each end. The next wire is passed through this loop before wrapping it around a bead. This method ensures there is no opening or weak link in the loops to allow the rosary to come apart. It is the most secure method of rosary making.
